![]() ![]() Really though i have just as little a clue as you do, i'm just an idiot speculating on the internet. It wasn't on his Best of 2017 list and i suspect he might have enjoyed the social half of the game more than the dungeon crawling. Talk about going above and beyond what is required whilst still maintaining such a unique style, i mean how many RPGs are soundtracked with slap-bass acid jazz?įor my money, Persona 5 is one of the top 3 games of last decade along with Breath of the Wild and MGSV, but dunkey probably doesn't hold it in as high regard. Especially Shoji Meguro should recieve a Nobel price or something for his soundtrack. This is of course elevated by the audio and video design which are in my humble opinion the greatest out of any game i've played. If you can make your desicions fast enough you can speed through battle at such a pace that the game barely feels turn based anymore. This combined with the snappy and excellent animation work lets the player decide the pace of battle instead of the animation like in most other JRPGs. They made the GENIUS move of mapping your various combat options to different buttons on the controller instead of listing them in a menu. It takes place in real world Tokyo instead of the mystic realm of Gungazoor, people have real world problems like depression, agoraphobia and abusive teachers instead of being cursed with the destiny of the omega blade, and finally despite the heavy subject matter at times the game isn't afraid to not take itself so seriously which is a common theme in the JRPGs Dunkey has liked such as: Undertale, Dragon Quest 11, Paper Mario and Earthbound.Īs for the turn-based combat, i think this is where the genius of P5 starts to shine through and what really sets it apart from previous entries in the series. The game is certainly anime but it is a lot more grounded than some of its contemporaries. The game is about meeting and bonding with different people over a long stretch of time and that really helps you get invested in the characters. This really gives playing through the game the same kind of feeling you get from bingeing several seasons of a show or tearing through a long book. One of the games biggest strengths role-playing wise is the way you advance through the game day by day. It would be intresting to see what he liked about it seeing as he hates all of its individual components (rpg, anime, turn based combat) but maybe i can try to do some guesswork based on my own thoughts. ![]()
